Since the 19th-century, visitors have come to Windermere and nearby Bowness to take in the wonderful views of Lake Windermere (named after the Norse settler Vinand as in "Vinand's mere") and sample the delights of central Lakeland. Windermere boasts many fine shops and a walk around the centre of the town reveals a wealth of slate and limestone buildings in various architectural styles. Windermere's close proximity to Bowness (the two towns are often thought of as one) allows it to share the delights of Bowness whilst keeping a charming character of its own
